First Lesson Analysis

In our first lesson of A level Media we analysed and deconstructed a photograph by the photographer Marc Riboud.

This Photograph is of a woman (Jan Rose Kasmir) holding up a flower to the armed soldiers while taking part with several thousand anti-war activists on the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam's march to The Pentagon. The photograph connotes the feeling that war is unnecessary and inhumane. The flower is a symbol of safety, hope and freedom. The photograph denotes a woman holding a flower in front of the soldiers who were going to fight. Jan holds the flower to show the soldiers what is the right thing to do.
Roland Barthes, who studied semiotics which is closely related to the field of linguistics, which studies the structure and meaning of language.
